What is Cub Scouting?

There are a lot of answers for this question.  Lets tackle the short one first.

We are not...

...a baby sitting service.  Please do not expect to sign up your son, drop him at a meeting, pick him up and repeat next week.  The scouting organization relies on active family participation.   We don't expect you to be at every meeting or event.  We do expect some help, and that can come  in the form of making snacks, offering to drive for trips, help run activities, working on a committee, being a den leader, etc.

Cub Scouts do things and goes places

Have you been to the local police station and talked to the policemen on duty? Or visited the fire station and sat in the driver's seat of the pumper truck? Or visited the local TV station and sat in the news anchor's chair? These are some of the places you might go with your den or pack.

You might also build a pinewood derby car and race it on the track, build a sailboat or trimaran and race it in the raingutter regatta, or build a spaceship and race it to the stars in the pack space derby.

Cub Scouts Earn Awards

Each time you complete an accomplishment or learn a new skill, you will be rewarded. Sometimes the reward is a bead or a patch. Sometimes it is a smile on your parents' faces to see you grow and learn.

How much time does the scouting program take?

Each den meet roughly 3 times a month for about an hour, and once as a pack for about 90 minutes.  From time to time we have other  events and activities including Pinewood derby, Christmas Caroling, Fossil Hunts, Cubanapolis, hikes and campouts.  These activities are optional  and have varying lengths of time.

My son is on a baseball or soccer team, we have a busy schedule, we don't have time for scouts.

Well, that is a valid statement. The skills and teamwork that sports teams offer are different the values and knowledge that Scouting offers.  Both programs have benefits for your son.  While we can sing the praises of the the Scouting program, you and your son need to decide for yourself.  We encourage you to come to a meeting or two and see what we have to offer.

Taking a part in a sports team can give your son extra recognition. There is a Sports and Academic Program where Cub Scouts learn new skills, become better scholars, learn sportsmanship, and have fun. You can get to know a sport or an academic subject that's new to you --maybe astronomy, chess, computers, science; golf, hiking, tennis, or skateboarding to name a few in the program.

I thought Scouting was all about hiking, camping and the outoors?

The Boy Scouts of America has taken to encourage the natural curiosity of youth members. STEM - Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. Experts say out young people need strong STEM skills to compete in the world market.   The Nova awards have been developed for this program to excite and expand a sense of wonder in our Scouts.
